Agartala: The Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC) has directed the Director General of Police (DGP), Tripura, to submit a detailed report regarding a gang rape incident that occurred on December 13, 2024.
The THRC’s intervention follows instructions from the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), underscoring the grave violation of the minor survivor’s human rights.
In its order, the THRC revealed that the complaint was initially sent via email to the NHRC by Shreshta, a resident of 4/23, Annai Sivagami Nagar, PRC Colony, Thirunagar, Madurai, Tamil Nadu. The email requested the NHRC to take suo-motu cognizance of the abduction and gang rape of the minor in Tripura.
According to the THRC, the case was reported at the Manpathar Police Outpost under Shantirbazar Police Station in South Tripura District. The incident occurred at Shantirbazar, where a minor girl was abducted near her home by two individuals. They took her to a rubber plantation, where three more individuals joined them, and the girl was gang-raped. The perpetrators later dropped her back home late at night.
The accused have been identified as Shaktiyya Reang (18), Nivas Tripura (19), Subhash Reang (19), Lakshmidhan Tripura (18), and Jiban Tripura (21). The victim’s mother lodged a formal complaint with the Manpathar Police Outpost.
The THRC has instructed the DGP, Tripura, to conduct a thorough investigation and submit a report within three weeks. The Commission also communicated its proceedings to the NHRC.
“Since the incident constitutes a violation of the human rights of a minor girl, a copy of the email and complaint should be sent to the DGP, Tripura, with directions to conduct an inquiry and submit the report to the Commission within three weeks. This order is to be communicated to the Secretary, NHRC,” the THRC order concluded.
