Dimapur: The Naga Council Dimapur (NCD) and Dimapur-based Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) have appealed to all the concerned government authorities and Naga Political Groups (NPGs) to “legally abolish” and “legally discourage” illegal activities and syndicate system in Dimapur. Their demand was made “to create congenial atmosphere/environment for free and competitive market in Dimapur”.
This was stated by the NCD following a meeting with the CSOs from Dimapur in light of the recent indefinite shutter down in Dimapur, and subsequently across Nagaland.
It stated that the recent indefinite shutter down of shops and business establishments in Dimapur by the Dimapur Chamber of Commerce and Industries (DCCI) had brought out the common issue related to multiple taxation, extortion, collection, donation by various groups, individuals, syndicates, welfare associations and unions which affected peaceful business activities.
“NCD appeals to the state government to extend its special attention to the security of public and business communities and also to install an all-round efficient administrative system to free Dimapur from anti-social and illegal business activities, city goons and monopoly market syndicators, drug traffickers and users as the Dimapur District, particularly in city area, has its social complexity and vulnerability to any evil activities by many people whose motives are to earn overnight through unfair business in Dimapur,” read a press statement from the NCD.
In the aftermath of the recent shutdown of business establishments initiated by the Dimapur Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) in protest against multiple money collections from shops and businesses, the CSOs emphasized that DCCI’s intent was not to target any specific Naga Political Group (NPGs).
It further stated that in the knowledge of the NCD too, most of the money collections from the traders/business communities are done in the name of some NPGs and even through adopting different modus operandi to loot businessmen.
Importantly, the NCD also noted that “one evil business practice in Dimapur” is the presence of numerous business syndicates “monopolized by outsiders who have linked systems with local bodies”. It stressed that this system has adversely affected small local businesses including local vegetable vendors coming from rural villages to Dimapur market areas.
“Concerned authorities, including NPGs should see that syndicate system is legally abolished once and for all and any citizen interested in business should be free avenue individually in Dimapur competitive market,” it stated.
Furthermore, the NCD has appealed to the concerned district administrative authorities and NPGs to “legally discourage the practice of syndicate business in Dimapur” to provide local businessmen a chance to develop their business.
