Agartala: Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha on Tuesday stated that the advancement of Indo-Bangla connectivity projects, such as Maitri Setu over the Feni River and Agartala-Akhaura railway services, largely hinges on the progress of bilateral relations between India and Bangladesh.
Responding to media queries about the delayed inauguration of these projects, Dr. Saha said, “The progress of these projects depends on how bilateral relations evolve. Discussions are ongoing at multiple levels.”
Addressing Bangladesh’s economic challenges, Dr. Saha commented, “The recent political shifts have significantly impacted Bangladesh’s economy. While there is no overt discord between India and Bangladesh, some underlying issues persist. Bangladesh’s growth cannot sidestep India, and once these issues are resolved, the projects will open avenues for cross-border trade.”
On the topic of rising infiltration from Bangladesh, the Chief Minister acknowledged discussions with the central government. “Certain stretches along the border are porous, allowing infiltration. I have urged the Home Ministry to reinforce these areas with additional barbed-wire fencing to prevent unauthorized crossings.”
He further explained that a three-tier security arrangement is in place along the Tripura-Bangladesh border. “The BSF serves as our first line of defense, supported by Tripura State Rifles and Tripura Police. Efforts across all levels are focused on preventing infiltration.”
As of October 28, 2024, the Border Security Force in Tripura has apprehended 556 Bangladeshi nationals and 50 Rohingya migrants this year, with 281 of those arrests made since August. Additionally, nine border facilitators were detained for aiding infiltrators. In comparison, in 2023, BSF detained 337 Bangladeshi nationals and 112 Rohingyas.
