December 11 this year marks 75 years of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). The day is celebrated worldwide every year for a better future for every child.
On this day, UNICEF was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1946 as United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund to improve the health, nutrition, education, and general welfare of children devastated due to World War II.
Since then the organisation works in 190 countries and territories aiming to save children’s lives, defend their rights, and help them fulfil their potential, from early childhood through adolescence.
Although the ‘Emergency’ in UNICEF was eventually dropped, the acronym still remains the same to date.
Objectives of UNICEF
UNICEF’s primary objective is to protect hapless children from every possible corner of the world and provide them access to basic rights like good education, food, sanitation, vaccination, etc.
The Triple Burden of Malnutrition
The UNICEF also releases its State of World Children Report on this day with the three main concerns being their undernutrition, obesity and hidden hunger, also called the triple burden of malnutrition.
UNICEF Day 2021 Theme
This year’s theme is, “to help children to recover from interruption and learning losses experienced through the pandemic in the last two years”.
