India will elect its next government over seven phases, the Election Commission of India has informed. Lok Sabha elections will be held in 7 phases.
Counting for all elections, including by-elections, assembly elections, and general elections, is slated for June 4. The current government’s term is ending on June 16.
Simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and assembly will be held in four states: Sikkim, Odisha, Arunachal Pradesh, and Andhra Pradesh.
Additionally, by-elections will take place for 26 assembly seats across various states, including Bihar, Gujarat, Haryana, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, and Tamil Nadu.
During the announcement, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar emphasised the importance of combating fake news on social media. He urged political parties to exercise responsible behaviour, stating, “Verify before you amplify.” He warned that fake news would face severe consequences in accordance with existing laws. He highlighted Section 79(3)(B) of the IT Act, which empowers nodal officers in each state to remove unlawful content.
Another significant point addressed by Kumar was the prohibition of hate speeches during the campaigning period. He emphasised the need for issue-based campaigns, discouraging speeches based on caste or religious lines, as well as personal attacks. He stressed maintaining a decorous atmosphere throughout the election process.
The Election Commission has reported an increase in eligible voters for the Lok Sabha elections to nearly 97 crore, marking a 6% rise since 2019.
Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh will vote for their next government on April 19, the Election Commission of India has announced. Gazette Notifications will be completed by March 20, the ECI added.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, speaking on the eve of the announcement of the upcoming general elections, said the NDA is expected to break all records when it comes to vote share.
