Guwahati: Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh will vote for their next government on April 19, the Election Commission of India has announced.
Gazette Notifications will be completed by March 20, the ECI added.
Sikkim is now being ruled by Sikkim Krantikari Morcha under the leadership of Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang. The SKM defeated Sikkim Democratic Front led by Pawan Kumar Chamling. Chamling is the longest serving Chief Minister of Sikkim. The ruling SKM is a constituent of the BJP led NDA. In the last elections, SKM won 17 seats while SDF could secure 15 seats in the 32 member state assembly.
The BJP won 41 seats in the 2019 Arunachal Assembly polls, and subsequently, seven MLAs of other parties, including the Janata Dal-United, joined the BJP.
The BJP formed its first elected government in Arunachal Pradesh in 2019. However, Chief Minister Khandu had formed the BJP government in 2016 after he, along with several MLAs, left the Congress to float the People’s Party of Arunachal to join the BJP ultimately.
