In a commendable display of coordinated efforts, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) collaborated seamlessly with central and state agencies to effectively mitigate the impact of Severe Cyclonic Storm (SCS) ‘Remal’. Originating as a low-pressure area on May 22, the cyclonic disturbance swiftly escalated into a severe storm before making landfall on the night of May 26-27 along the West Bengal and Bangladesh coasts.
Responding proactively to the looming threat, the Headquarters of Coast Guard Region (North-East) initiated preemptive measures and fostered synchronisation with various central and state bodies. This concerted effort bore fruit as no loss of life or property was reported at sea, underscoring the effectiveness of the strategic response.
Ahead of the cyclone’s arrival, the ICG mobilised a fleet of ships, aircraft, and shore-based surveillance systems to ensure vigilant monitoring and strategic redirection of merchant vessels away from the storm’s trajectory. Utilising Remote Operating Stations at Haldia and Paradip, timely alerts were disseminated to fishing boats and transiting merchant vessels, enabling them to navigate away from danger zones.

After the cyclone’s landfall, ICG Ship Varad swiftly set sail from Paradip to thoroughly assess the aftermath. Moreover, two ICG Dornier aircraft were dispatched from Bhubaneswar to conduct comprehensive surveillance missions over the North Bay of Bengal, enhancing situational awareness and facilitating targeted response efforts.
