Nagaland University hosts Cyber Security Awareness program

Nagaland University, Lumami, hosted a one-day Cyber Security Awareness programme on 21 August 2024. The event was conducted in a blended format, with Rupin Sharma, DGP of Nagaland, as the Chief Guest.

During his address, DGP Sharma highlighted the transition from traditional methods to the Information Technology era, emphasising that while technology has simplified tasks and improved accessibility, it has also introduced new risks. He warned of the dangers associated with the misuse of personal data and underscored the importance of online privacy. Sharma urged participants to remain vigilant against online scams, such as fraudulent cash prize offers, to avoid potential financial losses.

Discussing Cyber Security in Nagaland, Sharma stressed the need for a robust cyber security infrastructure in the state. He pointed out that Nagaland must strengthen its capabilities to combat cyber threats effectively. Sharma also outlined various initiatives undertaken by both the Indian and state governments, including the formation of Cyber Commandos within the police force and the recruitment of Cyber Volunteers—civilians trained to assist law enforcement. He expressed optimism that the University would collaborate with the state government to enhance cyber security measures.

Rishamo Philip Yanthan, Deputy SP of Mokokchung and former CBI Investigative Officer, served as a resource person at the event. He offered practical advice on maintaining cyber safety, such as using unique passwords, enabling two-factor authentication, securing devices, avoiding unnecessary applications, and exercising caution when using public Wi-Fi. Yanthan assured attendees that adhering to these guidelines would significantly improve their cyber security skills.

In his speech, Prof. Jagadish K Patnaik, Vice Chancellor of Nagaland University, emphasised the critical importance of raising awareness about cyber security in today’s technological age. The programme commenced with a Welcome Address by Kahoshe Sumi, DR (GAD), followed by an introduction to Cyber Security by Prof. Sujata Dash from the Department of IT, Nagaland University.

The event was chaired by Peter Ki, PRO of Nagaland University, and concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Ashish Kumar, Hindi Officer, Nagaland University.
