Aizawl: Lunglei town has been conferred the ‘Promising Swachh Shehar of Mizoram Award’ under the Swachh Survekshan Awards 2024–2025, organised by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), Government of India.
The awards ceremony was held at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, where the award was received by Mizoram Urban Development and Poverty Alleviation (UD&PA) Minister K. Sapdanga, Lunglei Municipal Council Vice Chairman K. Lalrinawma, Executive Councillor Lalhruaitluangi Sailo, UD&PA Secretary Lalmalsawma Pachuau and Director Jacob Lalawmpuia. The award was presented by Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal.
Swachh Survekshan, a flagship initiative under the Swachh Bharat Mission–Urban (SBM-U), evaluates the sanitation performance of cities and towns across India. This year marks the ninth edition of the awards, with a total of 78 recognitions announced.
Lunglei has been a consistent performer in the Swachh Survekshan since its first participation in 2016. It has won six awards so far. In 2019, it was named Best City in Innovation and Best Practices (North East Zone). In 2021, it earned the title of Best City in Citizen Feedback (North East Zone, population between 50,000 and 1 lakh). It was recognised as the Clean City in the North East Zone in both 2022 and 2023 in the same population category. In 2023, Lunglei was also declared the Cleanest City in Mizoram among towns with populations below one lakh.
Following the ‘One City, One Award’ principle, the top-performing cities from each State were recognized as Promising Swachh Shehars. A total of 34 cities across various States and Union Territories earned this distinction.
