Meghalaya: Former CM Salseng C Marak passes away at 82

Tura: Salseng C Marak, former Chief Minister of Meghalaya and a prominent Congress leader, passed away on Friday at Tura Civil Hospital (TCH) in West Garo Hills. He was 82.

Marak, who had been grappling with age-related health issues, was initially admitted to Holy Cross Hospital before being moved to TCH due to a deterioration in his condition.

Serving as Meghalaya’s Chief Minister from 1993 to 1998, Marak was one of the few leaders to complete a full term during a time marked by frequent governmental changes. His tenure was noted for navigating the state through significant political and social challenges.

Born in Baghmara, South Garo Hills, Marak was educated at Scottish Church College in Kolkata. He represented the Resubelpara constituency from 1970 to 2008, making a notable comeback in 2013 before being defeated again by Timothy D Shira of the NPP in the 2018 elections. Marak did not contest the 2023 elections due to health concerns.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma expressed his condolences, stating, “Deeply saddened to learn of the demise of former CM Salseng C. Marak. His contributions to Meghalaya’s development will always be remembered. My condolences to his family and loved ones. May he rest in peace.”

The body of Salseng Marak will be returned to Resubelpara, where a funeral will be held at his home in Gajingpara on August 17. The funeral will be attended by notable figures, including Tura MP Saleng Sangma, Deputy Speaker Timothy D Shira, and Mendipathar MLA Marthon Sangma. The last rites are scheduled to commence at 12 PM.

Tributes have been pouring in, with many acknowledging his legacy and contributions to Meghalaya’s political landscape.
