Tura: Social activist Cherian Momin has written to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, highlighting the dire state of infrastructure in the Resubelpara region of North Garo Hills (NGH).
Resubelpara, which serves as the district headquarters of NGH, is represented by senior NPP leader and Deputy Speaker Timothy D Shira.
“The state of these roads in Resubelpara is deplorable and is severely impacting the daily lives of residents, school children, office goers, and the general populace,” stated Cherian in a letter submitted on July 31.
The roads in question include the DC office road, PWD office road, municipality office road, Resu Rome Rabha road, Jonglapara road, and Dekachang road.
“The persistent neglect and lack of proper maintenance have left these roads filled with large potholes, making them hazardous for all users. Despite numerous complaints and pleas from the residents, no significant measures have been taken to address these issues,” Cherian added.
The activist emphasised that school children are the most affected, having to traverse these slushy and dilapidated roads daily.
“This not only poses a risk to their safety but also reflects poorly on the local MLA’s concern for his constituents. The condition of these roads highlights the state government’s failure to provide adequate road infrastructure and communication facilities for the people of Resubelpara, the district headquarters,” asserted Cherian, calling it a glaring example of administrative apathy.
Cherian further alleged that no efforts have been made to repair these roads. Instead, he claimed that some contractors are filling the potholes with red soil and withdrawing AR and SR schemes every year.
“This temporary and ineffective solution only exacerbates the problem, as the red soil is washed away during the rains, leaving the roads in an even worse condition than the previous year. It affects productivity, raises risks, hampers daily commute, and reflects poorly on the state and administration,” stated Cherian.
Through his letter, the activist sought an immediate review of the situation and an overhaul of the crumbling infrastructure.

“An immediate assessment is required as well as transparency in contracts given. Further, involving the community and long-term infrastructure planning and implementation is the need of the hour. We hope these matters will be looked into earnestly by you and the present government for the sake of the people of the constituency,” urged Cherian.
