Shillong: Mariahom Kharkrang, spokesperson for Meghalaya BJP, announced on Monday the party’s intention to contest the upcoming Gambegre by-election. The seat fell vacant following the elevation of sitting MLA Saleng Sangma to Member of Parliament for the Tura Parliamentary Constituency.

Kharkrang revealed that the decision was a key agenda item in the party’s recent meeting, where Member of District Council (MDC) Bernard Marak expressed keen interest in contesting the elections. Highlighting Marak’s local influence, Kharkrang expressed confidence in his ability to mount a competitive campaign.

“A portion of the seat belongs to MDC Bernard Marak, who has a strong foothold there. We expect him to put up a good fight,” Kharkrang asserted. He noted that while the seat was previously represented by MP Saleng Sangma, a new candidate will be fielded this time, potentially altering the electoral dynamics.

Regarding Marak’s recent criticisms of the party’s alliance partner, NPP, Kharkrang defended Marak’s right as Vice President of the BJP to voice concerns backed by thorough research and evidence.

“As a public representative, he has every right to bring these issues to light,” Kharkrang emphasised.

It is anticipated that NPP will nominate Chief Minister’s wife, Mehtab Chandee, as their candidate for the Gambegre by-election.
