Imphal: The Kuki-Zo Council (KZC), in a statement issued on behalf of the Kuki-Zo community, has extended a warm welcome to Prime Minister Narendra Modi ahead of his upcoming visit, describing it as a “historic and rare occasion,” since nearly four decades have passed since an Indian Prime Minister last visited their region.
In its statement, the KZC said the community has endured “immeasurable hardships” in recent years, claiming that more than 250 lives were lost, over 360 churches destroyed, and 7,000 homes burnt, while more than 40,000 people remain displaced in relief camps.
The council alleged that the Kuki-Zo people have been “forcibly separated” due to the actions of the majority community in Manipur, but added that they continue to place their faith in the democratic spirit and leadership of India.
Reiterating their long-standing demand, the KZC stressed the need for “complete separation from Manipur” and called for a Union Territory with legislature under Article 239A of the Constitution. “This demand arises not from convenience, but from necessity—for peace, security, and survival of our people,” the statement said.
The council expressed confidence that the Prime Minister would recognise their “voice, pain, and aspirations” and urged him to address their concerns. “We place our trust in your leadership to heal our wounds, restore our dignity, and safeguard the future of the Kuki-Zo people,” it said.
The KZC concluded its statement by offering its “warmest welcome” to Modi and expressing hope for the success of his visit.
