The EU (European Union) has allocated €250,000 (over 22.6 million Indian rupees) to support victims of the recent severe weather in Manipur, northeastern India. This humanitarian aid, aimed at assisting those most affected by the early May hailstorm and heavy rain, will benefit more than 1,500 vulnerable families in the worst-hit areas.
EU humanitarian partner ADRA will deliver the aid, prioritizing the distribution of food and emergency shelter kits. These supplies will help communities cope with the storm’s impact on their livelihoods and assist in restoring damaged houses.
On May 5, a severe hailstorm struck Manipur, causing extensive damage to over 48,000 houses, infrastructure, agricultural lands, and crops across 16 districts. The storm, which lasted 15 minutes and featured hailstones up to four inches in diameter, led to major flooding in urban areas and widespread power outages.
The EU and its Member States are the world’s leading donors of humanitarian aid. This relief assistance is an expression of European solidarity with people in need around the world. The funding is provided through the European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO) department of the European Commission.
With headquarters in Brussels and a global network of field offices, the EU assists millions of victims of conflict and disasters annually, focusing on the most vulnerable based on humanitarian needs.
