Imphal: In a concerning development, a fresh bout of gunfire has resulted in one individual sustaining a bullet injury in Manipur’s Thoubal district.
The incident, which occurred on Friday, unfolded amid a clash between village volunteers and an unidentified armed group, according to police.
The skirmish erupted during the early hours near Heirok village when armed assailants from the hill range opened fire towards Heirok village, prompting the village volunteers to retaliate.
The exchange of gunfire persisted for approximately one hour, followed by sporadic rounds of shooting.
During the confrontation, one person identified as Ningthoujam James Singh suffered a gunshot wound. The injured individual was transported to a nearby hospital in Imphal for urgent medical attention.
Sporadic firing has been reported in the same area, indicating ongoing tensions, at the time of this writing.
In response to the escalating situation, additional security forces have been deployed in the area to restore order and prevent further violence, authorities confirmed.

In a separate incident, miscreants reportedly set ablaze a sawmill owned by Mutum Ravi Singh near Pallel in Kakching district around 3 am. Fire services promptly rushed to the scene to contain the blaze. The mill was completely gutted.
While police have launched an investigation to apprehend the perpetrators behind the arson attack, the motive behind the incident remains unclear at the time of reporting.
