Indian Railways will introduce Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) coaches on the Kanchanjunga Express later this month, replacing the existing ICF rakes on the Sealdah–Sabroom (13173/13174) and Sealdah–Silchar (13175/13176) services. The upgraded rakes will come into operation on 28 and 29 November respectively.
The Kanchanjunga Express is an important connection between eastern India and the Northeast, used by thousands of passengers travelling between West Bengal, Tripura, Assam and neighbouring states. Railway officials said the shift to LHB coaches is aimed at improving safety and passenger comfort.

The new rakes have anti-telescopic design features to reduce the impact during collisions and are fitted with improved suspension systems for a more stable ride. LHB coaches also allow higher operational speeds and have more refined interiors compared to conventional ICF stock.
Each rake will include five AC 3-Tier coaches, one AC 2-Tier coach, nine Sleeper Class coaches and four General Sitting coaches. Officials said this configuration maintains a balance across travel classes while increasing the overall quality of service.
The move is part of the Railways’ wider effort to replace older rakes with modern stock across the network as it continues to upgrade passenger services.
