The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed a chargesheet on 27 August 2024 against the former Assistant Commissioner of Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST) at the GST Commissionerate in Guwahati, in connection with a bribery case.
The case was initially registered by the CBI on 29 June 2024 following a complaint from a private businessman. The complainant alleged that he had been served with demand and show cause notices by the then Assistant Commissioner, who called him to the CGST office on multiple occasions. The businessman, who had completed civil works and paid all relevant taxes, claimed that the Assistant Commissioner demanded a bribe of ₹2 lakh in exchange for passing favourable orders. After negotiations, the amount was reportedly reduced to ₹50,000.
A trap was set by the CBI, leading to the Assistant Commissioner’s arrest after he was caught red-handed accepting the bribe from the complainant. Following the arrest, searches were conducted at the official and residential premises of the accused in Guwahati and Hyderabad.
