Kamjong: At least five people, including the chief of Chassad village, were reportedly injured in fresh firing in Manipur’s Kamjong district on Saturday, triggering tension in the area.
According to local sources, firing broke out at around 2:30 pm in areas adjoining Kamjong bazar and Chassad village, leaving five people injured. The injured were identified as Thangjahao Haokip, chief of Chassad; ST Khailun Haokip; Thanggin Haokip; Seikhohou; and Seipao Haokip, chief of Phungtha (Kachouphung-Kuki).
The injured were reportedly evacuated to the Assam Rifles Hospital for treatment.
Sources alleged that suspected Kuki militants opened fire on Tangkhul Naga civilians in Kamjong, triggering fear and panic among residents. Locals further alleged that personnel of the 11 Assam Rifles, along with two Casspir vehicles stationed near Lingkim Memorial School in the Chassad Kuki area, assisted armed Kuki men during the incident. These allegations could not be independently verified.
However, residents of Chassad offered a different account, alleging that the initial firing originated from the Kamjong side towards Chassad village at around 2:42 pm, while villagers were repairing electricity lines in the area.
