Shillong: The Khasi Students’ Union’s East Jaintia Hills unit has raised concerns about alleged gaps in Shree Cement’s Environmental Impact Assessment and urged protection for caves and monoliths near proposed mining operations.
At a hearing before a government-appointed fact-finding committee, assistant secretary Pynshaikupar Dkhar said the union identified Krem Rngi, Krem Nohpyncha and Krem Kutsniang as sites requiring attention.
It also sought protected or heritage status for Krem Kutsniang, which local historical accounts cited by the union describe as a hiding place for freedom fighter U Kiang Nangbah during the 1886 uprising against British rule.
The KSU also asked the committee and government to consider protecting monoliths at Lum Thangsyiem Moopatep in Tongseng village. The union said safeguarding the sites could support tourism and local livelihoods.
Dkhar said the committee recorded the points raised.
