The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) is preparing a large cultural programme in Guwahati on 18 November to mark the 53rd birth anniversary of singer and composer Zubeen Garg. This will be the first birth anniversary observed since his death in September.
The event, titled Kanchanjungha – Sanskriti Houk Maitreyir Mantra, has been planned as a public tribute bringing together artists, writers, students and members of Assam’s cultural community. Congress leaders said the programme aims to honour Garg’s contribution to Assamese music and public life.
APCC president Gaurav Gogoi said the gathering would celebrate the late singer’s artistic legacy while also recognising his role in promoting Assamese identity. He said, “This 18th of November will be the first birth anniversary of our beloved Zubeen Garg since his passing. We are organising this central tribute, ‘Kanchanjungha – Culture as the mantra of friendship’, not only to celebrate his art but also to honour his lifelong commitment to Assam’s cultural identity. Zubeen Garg stood for justice, creativity, and the pride of Assam—values the Congress continues to uphold.”

Since Garg’s death in Singapore, the Assam Congress has been calling for a transparent investigation into the circumstances leading to the incident. The party has organised marches, public meetings and digital campaigns under the “Justice for Zubeen Garg” banner, urging authorities to ensure accountability.
The cultural programme will feature performances by artists including Joi Baruah, Manas Robin, Maitreyee Patar, Rupam Bhuyan, Sweety Das, Richa Bhardwaj and Trishna Devi. Several writers, filmmakers and members of Garg’s extended artistic circle are also expected to attend.
The APCC has additionally announced a state-wide drive to plant Nahor saplings, citing Garg’s long-standing environmental advocacy and his personal fondness for the tree. Gogoi said saplings would be planted in every booth across the state as a mark of respect.
Born on 18 November 1972, Garg became one of Assam’s most influential cultural figures, known for reshaping contemporary Assamese music and engaging in public activism. His death has prompted widespread mourning and renewed discussions on cultural identity and justice in the state.
