Guwahati: The Assam government is mulling the amendments to the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for withdrawing petty and minor cases in subordinate courts, aiming to reduce the burden on the legal system and decongest jails by releasing undertrial prisoners.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, following a cabinet meeting on Friday, announced that this move will lead to the withdrawal of 81,000 petty cases registered till March 2024.

The council of ministers also greenlit a proposal to establish a Centre of Excellence in aerospace, defence, automotive, electric vehicle industries, and more. The project, spearheaded by Dassault Systems Private Ltd, will see an investment of Rs 200 crore from the company, with the Assam government contributing Rs 40 crore. External monitoring, advisory, and implementation support will be part of the initiative.

As part of this project, 3,000 engineering graduates from the state will receive specialized training in fields such as robotics, aerospace, defence, and artificial intelligence, the chief minister added.

In another significant move, the cabinet approved the procurement of 100 MW of wind-solar hybrid power from NTPC.
