Silchar: A differently-abled girl has allegedly been raped by her neighbor in Cachar district in Assam. According to reports, the incident occurred in Katigorah, approximately 30 km from Silchar, in Cachar district on Sunday.
Initially, the matter did not become public as some local residents allegedly tried to suppress it and resolve it internally. A community meeting was held, but the girl’s mother refused to settle the matter privately and decided to approach the police.
The girl’s mother lodged an FIR at Katigorah police station. In her statement to the police, she reported that her daughter, around 19 years old, was raped by their neighbor, T. Uddin, on Sunday afternoon.
The assault occurred while the girl’s mother was at a flood relief camp obtaining relief materials due to the ongoing flood situation. The man allegedly took the girl, who has hearing and speech impairments, to his home and raped her there. Upon her return from the relief camp, the daughter informed her mother about the incident, which led to the police report.
Katigorah police station’s officer-in-charge, Joseph Keivom, informed reporters that a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered, and the girl’s medical examination was conducted on Tuesday. A manhunt has been launched to arrest the suspect involved in this heinous crime, Keivom said.
