Guwahati: Wildlife conservation group Aaranyak held two community consultations in Tamulpur district on October 9 to discuss ways to reduce human–elephant conflict, as incidents have risen during the harvest season.
The meetings took place in Santipur and Abhaypur villages and involved residents from four project villages.
Aaranyak said participants suggested locations for proposed conflict-mitigation tools and identified households that may need searchlights to move around after dark or guard shared land against elephant incursions.

The consultations were conducted with support from the IUCN SSC Center for Species Survival Asian Elephant Rapid Response 2026 Grant and in collaboration with the Assam State Forest Department.
Nearly 110 people attended the two programmes, which also included sessions on elephant conservation and coexistence.
Aaranyak said two mature elephants died in separate incidents on September 18 and October 6 in Tamulpur and adjoining Baksa district, respectively, allegedly after deliberate electrocution. A person died in Tamulpur on September 25 following an encounter with a lone wild elephant.
