CBSE overhauls class 11-12 question papers for NEP alignment

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced significant changes in the composition of question papers for classes 11 to 12 for the upcoming academic session 2024-25. The changes aim to align assessments with the National Education Policy (NEP) of 2020, which emphasises competency-based education.

For classes 9 to 10, the composition of the question paper remains unchanged from the previous academic session. Competency-focused questions in the form of MCQs/case-based questions account for 50%, select response-type questions (MCQs) for 20%, and constructed response questions for 30%.

However, for classes 11 to 12, there are notable changes. The proportion of select response-type questions remains the same at 30%, but the proportion of competency-focused questions increases from 40% to 50%, while constructed response questions decrease from 40% to 30%.

The CBSE stated that these changes are being made to create an educational ecosystem that moves away from rote memorisation and focuses on developing students’ creative, critical, and system-thinking capacities to meet the challenges of the 21st century.
