Gangtok: Bodies of two trekkers were discovered on Monday at an elevation of 11,800 feet in the protected Singalila National Park, located on the Indo-Nepal border in West Sikkim.
The deceased trekkers were identified as a female from Tikjek village and a male from Yuksom village in Geyzing district.
The two had parked their bike in Uttarey, the last road-connected village in West Sikkim, on May 19 before setting off on their trek. An abandoned tent was also found in Pani Bhitta near Phoktey, indicating where they may have camped during their journey.
The bodies were found after eight days near Border Crossing Pillar 49, on the open (non-fenced) Indo-Nepal border. The location is part of the famous Singalila trek, which connects Darjeeling’s Sandakphu peak with Sikkim’s westernmost border to Nepal at Chewabhanjyang in West Sikkim.

Sikkim Police officials from Uttarey and Chewabhanjyang recovered the bodies and transported them downhill to Uttarey village.
The cause of death is yet to be determined, but locals speculate that it could be due to lightning and thunderstorms, which are common in such high-elevation areas.
