Sikkim takes new steps to regulate tourist vehicle permits for Nathula

Rangpo: One person was killed, and 10 others were injured in varying degrees when their taxi collided with a truck near Tarkhola, around 10 km from Rangpo, on Monday.

The mishap occurred when the taxi, traveling from Jorethang to Gangtok, collided with a truck moving towards Siliguri at the Tarkhola stretch of NH 10 in Kalimpong district around noon.

Eyewitnesses at the scene reported a loud crash, followed by immediate chaos as other commuters rushed to assist the victims.

Local authorities were quick to respond, dispatching emergency services to the site of the accident. The deceased was identified as a resident of Tharpu, West Sikkim.

The injured passengers were rushed to the nearby Rangpo PHC, with some victims being referred to STNM Hospital in Gangtok for further treatment.

Authorities have begun an investigation to determine the exact cause of the collision. Preliminary reports suggest that weather conditions and road visibility will be examined as potential factors.

This fatal accident has left the local community in shock, with many expressing concerns over road safety in the area. Tarkhola and its surroundings have seen an increase in traffic, prompting residents to call for stricter enforcement of traffic laws to prevent future incidents.
