Manipur Uni student documentary ‘Khongjomnubi’ selected for Kerala film festival

Imphal: A documentary produced by students of Manipur University’s Department of Mass Communication has been selected for the Short Documentary Competition section of the 18th International Documentary and Short Film Festival of Kerala (IDSFFK).

Titled Khongjomnubi, the documentary was made by students of the department’s 2023–2025 batch as part of their academic curriculum on documentary film production. It will be screened alongside works by documentary filmmakers from across India.

IDSFFK is organised by the Kerala Chalachitra Academy, Government of Kerala, and provides a platform for documentary and short-film productions.

The documentary was directed by Laimujam Johnson Meitei, Shelly Kshetrimayum, Khwairakpam Sharonz Devi, Johnson Sorokhaibam and Ngangom Nikita. The project was supervised by Dr Meenakumari Angom, assistant professor, and Dr Johnson Rajkumar, guest faculty, in the Department of Mass Communication.

Khongjomnubi tells the story of Ibemhal, a veteran athlete, and focuses on her life, struggles and resilience. The documentary portrays her multiple roles as a mother, athlete and vegetable seller, highlighting themes of determination and everyday labour.

The selection marks the film’s transition from an academic production to a national-level competitive platform.

Laimujam Johnson Meitei, representing the directors’ team, is scheduled to travel to Thiruvananthapuram to attend the festival and represent Khongjomnubi.

The selection also highlights the scope for student filmmakers from Manipur University to engage with documentary filmmaking and showcase their work on national and international platforms.
