Aizawl: A project aimed at conserving and restoring the catchment areas of the Barak River and its tributaries will be implemented across eight districts of Mizoram, officials said at a meeting held in Khawzawl on Thursday.
The meeting on the project, titled “Conservation & Restoration of Catchment Areas of Barak River in the States of Assam, Manipur, Mizoram and Nagaland,” was held at the DC Conference Hall in Khawzawl under the chairmanship of Deputy Commissioner K. Vanlalthiana.
Rajkhungur Basumatary, Senior Manager of the North Eastern Region Community Resource Management Society (NERCORMS), made a presentation outlining the project and its proposed activities.
The project will be funded by the Government of India and KfW, Germany, and implemented under the North Eastern Council (NEC), with NERCORMS serving as the executing agency.
In Mizoram, the project will cover Aizawl, Champhai, Mamit, Lunglei, Serchhip, Kolasib, Saitual and Khawzawl districts.
Officials said the Barak River and its tributary systems have been increasingly affected by improper land use, inadequate watershed management and a lack of coordination in managing the river system. These challenges have contributed to flooding, landslides and other related problems.
The project will focus on conserving forests, wildlife and water resources, while also improving the livelihoods of farmers in the catchment areas.

During the meeting, officials from various line departments were directed to collect and provide the data required for the project.
NERCORMS officials are scheduled to return to Mizoram from October 12 to 16, 2026, when they will conduct field inspections of catchment areas in Khawzawl district and hold discussions with concerned government officials.
