Gangtok: In a high-level meeting held on Friday, chaired by the Chief Secretary at Teesta Lounge, the Secretariat, the Government of Sikkim has announced a series of measures to rationalise vehicle permits for tourists visiting Nathula. This initiative aims to effectively manage the peak tourist season and minimize inconvenience to stakeholders and tourists.
Vehicle Permit Restriction
Starting from May 25, 2024, to June 30, 2024, the number of vehicle permits issued for Nathula visits will be capped at 800 per day. This decision is part of the government’s strategy to control the influx of tourists and ensure a smooth experience for all.
Luxury Vehicle Charges
The transportation cost for luxury vehicles to Nathula has been set at Rs. 7000 per vehicle, inclusive of all charges, including Nathula permit fees. Additionally, vehicles with “J” series permits will be charged Rs. 6500 per vehicle when booked through travel agencies.
Strict Monitoring
The Tourism Department will rigorously monitor vehicle charges and the number of authorised vehicles, working closely with the Police, Check-post, and Army to ensure compliance with the new regulations.
Enforcement by Army
The Army will enforce the 800-vehicle permit limit issued by the Tourism Department. These measures will be continuously reviewed and will remain in place until further notice.
These decisions underscore the government’s commitment to managing tourism in Sikkim responsibly, ensuring that both visitors and local stakeholders can benefit from a well-regulated system during the peak season.
