Silchar: In a recent incident, a man has been arrested by police in southern Assam’s Karimganj district for allegedly kicking a picture of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The arrested individual, Raju Rajkumar, hails from Patharkandi in Karimganj district and is a former member of the Patharkandi Zilla Parishad.

According to various sources, the incident occurred outside Rabindra Bhavan in Patharkandi, approximately 80 km from Silchar town, on Sunday afternoon. BJP workers were preparing for a procession to celebrate the victory of MP Kripanath Mallah in the Lok Sabha election.

During these preparations, Raju Rajkumar reportedly arrived and became involved in a verbal altercation with Abdul Rahim, a member of the BJP’s Yuva Morcha. The argument escalated into a physical confrontation, during which Raju allegedly kicked a picture of Prime Minister Modi that was affixed to a vehicle intended for the victory rally.

BJP workers who witnessed the incident notified others, prompting Raju to flee the scene. Shashibabu Sinha, president of the Patharkandi BJP block mandal, filed an FIR against Raju at the Patharkandi police station. Following the registration of the case, police launched an investigation and apprehended Raju from a location in Patharkandi on Sunday evening.

During his arrest, Raju reportedly engaged in a quarrel and verbally abused Assistant Sub Inspector F. U. Laskar. Besides the FIR lodged by Shashibabu Sinha, two additional FIRs were filed against Raju—one by Abdul Rahim and another by ASI F. U. Laskar. Raju was interrogated for several hours on Sunday night, presented in court on Monday, and subsequently sent to judicial custody.

Police records indicate that Raju has multiple cases registered against him, primarily related to physical altercations.
