Indian Railways provided a subsidy amounting to Rs 56,993 crore on passenger tickets during the financial year 2022-23, which translates to an average discount of 46% for passengers. The information was shared by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw during a parliamentary session today, emphasising the efforts to make rail travel more affordable.
According to the data presented, the subsidy effectively reduces the fare cost for passengers. For example, if the total cost of providing the service is Rs 100, passengers pay approximately Rs 54, with the remaining cost subsidised. This discount applies to all passengers, regardless of the class of travel.
In addition to the general fare subsidy, certain groups continue to receive additional concessions. These include four categories of persons with disabilities, 11 categories of patients, and eight categories of students, ensuring specific relief for these groups beyond the standard discount.
