The Government of India has sanctioned 40 tourism development projects across 23 states, amounting to a total investment of Rs. 3,295 crore. Among the projects, Assam’s Rang Ghar in Sivasagar and the Assam State Zoo and Botanical Garden in Guwahati have been selected for significant upgrades to boost their tourism appeal.
Rang Ghar, an 18th-century structure built by Ahom King Swargadeo Pramatta Singha, is set to undergo renovations worth Rs. 94.76 crore. Once a royal pavilion for traditional Bihu celebrations and sports, the monument is slated for infrastructure enhancements such as a tourist information centre, artisan village, food court, amphitheatre, clock tower, musical fountain, and façade improvements. The project aims to balance modern visitor amenities with the preservation of the site’s historical essence.
The Assam State Zoo and Botanical Garden in Guwahati has been allocated Rs. 97.12 crore for a comprehensive overhaul. Planned upgrades include visitor-friendly amenities like electric buggies, eco-friendly zones, digital guides, and improved animal enclosures adhering to contemporary standards. The project also focuses on infrastructure for visitor safety, interactive exhibits, and improved pathways. The initiative aims to elevate the zoo’s role as a centre for wildlife conservation while enhancing the visitor experience.
