Kohima: Yimkhiung Akherü Arihako (YAA), the apex student body of the Yimkhiung Naga tribe, began their indefinite agitation against the inaction of the Nagaland government to address the teacher shortage crisis in the districts of Shamator and Kiphire.
During the protest on Friday, memorandum to the Principal Director, Directorate of School Education (DoSE), was submitted through the offices of the DC Shamator and SDO (CIVIL) Chessore under Shamator district, and ADC Pungro under Kiphire district.
Students held placards that read, “We want to become doctors & engineers, send us maths and science teachers”, “Students rising, teachers missing; Time for change”, “No teacher, no education,” and more.
The student body reminded the government that on June 30, 2023, a memorandum was submitted to the government demanding the redressal of teacher shortage. Subsequently, a reminder letter was sent on August 22, 2023, and on January 18, 2024, a 14-day ultimatum was issued but to no avail.
In protest, the students warned that no admission will be undertaken within their jurisdiction till their demands are met.

YAA Speaker, Lemchay Thongley, told EastMojo that the YAA is demanding the allotment of 280 teachers in all categories including Physical Education Teacher (PET), Graduate Teacher (GT), Post Graduate Teacher (PGT), Hindi Teacher, Language Teacher, and more.
He informed that after concluding the rallies, the students body also shut down government offices including Tourist place and Likimro Hydro Electrical Project.
