Mizoram recorded India’s highest estimated prevalence of secondary infertility at 33.9%, followed by Meghalaya at 28.1% and Ladakh at 25.2%, according to a 2026 study analysing National Family Health Survey-5 (NFHS-5) data.

Secondary infertility refers to difficulty conceiving after a previous pregnancy. The study analysed data collected between 2019 and 2021, highlighting the need for improved access to reproductive healthcare and fertility services.

Globally, infertility affects approximately one in six people of reproductive age at some point in their lives, according to the World Health Organization. In India, the cost of consultations, diagnostic tests and fertility treatment can limit access to specialised care.

Against this backdrop, Birla Fertility & IVF has been empanelled under the Mizoram Universal Healthcare Scheme (MUHCS) by the Mizoram State Health Care Society, enabling eligible couples to access government-supported in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) treatment at its Guwahati centre.

The arrangement will also provide specialist fertility consultations through outpatient department (OPD) services in Aizawl, allowing couples to seek initial assessments and guidance within the state.

Couples advised by local practitioners to undergo IVF can approach the office of the Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Aizawl, to initiate the referral and authorisation process. Following the necessary approvals, eligible couples can access treatment at the Guwahati centre, with costs covered under the applicable provisions of MUHCS.

Abhishek Aggrawal, CEO of Birla Fertility & IVF, said the empanelment would help address financial barriers to specialised fertility treatment.

He said the organisation would work with the Mizoram State Health Care Society to expand access to fertility consultations and evidence-based treatment through its Guwahati centre and OPD services in Aizawl.

Kalpana Jain, a fertility specialist at the Guwahati centre, said delays in seeking specialist care could postpone the identification of underlying reproductive health conditions and appropriate treatment.

She said the initiative would bring consultations closer to couples in Mizoram while providing access to specialised IVF services.
