Aizawl: A coordination meeting regarding the biometric registration of refugees from Myanmar was held today at the DC Conference Hall in Keifangtlang, Champhai. The meeting was chaired by Champhai Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Aaquib and focused on the upcoming exercise to collect biometric data of displaced persons currently taking shelter in the district.
According to official estimates, Champhai District is currently hosting around 13,586 refugees from Myanmar. The biometric registration is being carried out as per instructions from the Home Department to ascertain the exact number of refugees and maintain a secure and accurate record.
A special team comprising officials from the DC Office and the SP Office has been constituted to carry out the registration drive. These teams will visit various localities across Champhai to ensure comprehensive coverage. The drive will begin on July 31, starting with Champhai Vengthlang, Kanan Veng, and Dinthar Veng.
Village Councils have been asked to cooperate and help verify the number of refugees residing in their areas. Each team has been assigned specific localities and is expected to follow a detailed plan to carry out the task smoothly.
DC Mohammad Aaquib stressed the importance of proper planning and coordination, stating that “with careful preparation and dedicated team members from various departments, we can ensure that this critical task is carried out efficiently.” He also appealed to local bodies like Village Councils (VC), Young Mizo Association (YMA), and Mizo Hmeichhe Insuihkhawm Pawl (MHIP) to provide active support to the teams during the registration process.
The meeting was attended by Additional DC K. Zorammuana, SDO (Sadar) Ngulzathuama, Additional SP Victor Zothansanga, and representatives from local VCs and the YMA.
