Aizawl: Residents of Tlabung village in Mizoram’s Lunglei district have launched a protest against the transfer of a teacher from the Government Tlabung High School, effectively shutting down the school and blocking access to students and staff.
According to local news source Bengvarna, the protest began after a Mathematics teacher from Government High School Lungtian was transferred to Aizawl, and the teacher from Tlabung was set to be transferred to Lungtian to fill that vacancy. Villagers said they were disheartened that their teacher was taken away without ensuring a replacement, claiming it was unfair to resolve staffing issues in another school at the cost of their own.
The protest has taken the form of a total boycott of school functions. Villagers have barred entry to the school for both students and teachers. On Sunday, while most of the village observed a day of worship, other organisations including the Hindu Welfare Society, Young Pahari Association, and Young Chakma Association took turns to maintain the blockade.
As of now, the government has not issued a public response. In the absence of any official communication, the blockade and school shutdown continues. The villagers insist they will not allow the school to reopen until the issue is resolved and their teacher’s position is restored or replaced.
