Aizawl: Mizoram is set to make history by hosting India’s inaugural Red Bull Urban Downhill Racing event, Red Bull Tlang Ruam, on Saturday in the bustling streets of Aizawl. This groundbreaking event will unite elite cyclists from across India and beyond, marking a major milestone in India’s adventure sports landscape.
The competition will feature 21 cyclists, including three from Mizoram, vying for the title. The day’s schedule kicks off with practice sessions at 9:30 AM, followed by qualifying rounds at 10:30 AM, and the main race at 12:05 PM.
Among the expert mentors is Tomáš Slavík, the Czech mountain biking legend and an international name in the sport.
The stakes are high, as the winner will secure a spot in a prestigious Red Bull event in South America, intensifying the excitement around the historic race.
Planning for Red Bull Tlang Ruam has been meticulous. In May, Chief Minister Lalduhoma, alongside Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar, held pivotal discussions with Red Bull representatives, focusing on the logistics and impact of hosting this Urban Downhill Racing event in Aizawl.
Chief Minister Lalduhoma voiced his enthusiasm, seeing the event as a unique opportunity to elevate Mizoram’s international profile. Minister Hmar remarked, “We deeply appreciate his enthusiastic support, and the government has extended its full assistance to ensure a successful event.”
The journey toward this event began last December when Tomáš Slavík visited Mizoram to explore Aizawl’s streets, designing a challenging urban downhill route tailored to the city’s rugged landscape.
The course promises thrill and danger with tight corners, steep descents, narrow staircases, and other complex obstacles that showcase Aizawl’s demanding terrain.
The Red Bull Tlang Ruam will push participants through a grueling, four-minute descent, navigating Aizawl’s distinctive urban layout and demanding course features.
The competition is poised to crown the first-ever winner of Red Bull Tlang Ruam, a historic title in India’s burgeoning urban downhill racing scene.
In addition to the collaboration with Red Bull, Minister Hmar has actively engaged with the Mizoram Cycling Association, seeking insights and feedback to ensure a seamless event.
This initiative not only represents a new chapter for adventure sports in India but also showcases Mizoram as a dynamic location for extreme sports, setting the stage for future events.
