Aizawl: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Mizoram has raised concerns over the government’s decision to seek monetary contributions from students for a district-level sports event.
Speaking at a press interaction on Monday, AAP Mizoram President Andrew Lalremkima Pachuau alleged that the government was neglecting its responsibilities toward education by imposing such financial burdens on students.
The Aizawl District Secondary School Sports 2024, scheduled to take place from October 7 to 11, has become the center of controversy after the District Education Officer (DEO) issued a notification on September 30, 2024.
According to the notification, headmasters and principals of all secondary schools in the district were instructed to collect Rs 20 from each student as a contribution toward the sports event.
Pachuau expressed dismay over the demand, questioning why the government does not have a budget allocated for co-curricular activities. “We find it hard to understand how the government is unable to fund such events, which are essential for the all-round development of students. Asking for contributions from students shows negligence and a lack of planning,” he said.
AAP Mizoram criticised the move, arguing that it reflects poorly on the government’s commitment to supporting education and student welfare. The party also raised concerns that such financial demands could create undue pressure on students and their families, especially those from economically weaker sections.
