Aizawl: The Mizo Bawngsa Zuar Association, representing beef sellers in Mizoram, addressed the media on Wednesday, expressing concerns over non-locals engaging in the sale of beef in the region. President H Lalhmingthanga voiced their apprehensions, citing recent instances of non-locals conducting beef sales without proper legal authorization.
He said, traditionally, beef selling has been a generational practice among Mizos but the association noted a rise in non-locals entering the market without the necessary permissions. Lalhmingthanga highlighted that some non-locals even conduct sales on Sundays, disregarding the significance of the day for worship.
Expressing their dismay, the association underscored the importance of preserving local control over beef sales. They pointed out that many of these non-locals, primarily from Bihar and Muslim communities, lack proper permissions and were originally granted Inner Line Permits (ILPs) for different purposes such as cement or construction work, not for engaging in beef sales.

In an effort to address the issue, the association set a deadline of May 13, 2024, urging non-locals to cease their beef-selling businesses. They emphasized the need for unity among Mizos to safeguard their cultural practices and economic interests. Additionally, they cautioned locals against collaborating with non-locals in these activities, urging them to prioritize the long-term welfare of the state.
