Aizawl: On Tuesday, amidst a solemn yet hopeful atmosphere, World AIDS Orphans Day was observed at the Gan Sabra Home in Luangmual West, Aizawl. The event aimed to raise awareness about the plight of children orphaned by HIV/AIDS and honor the dedicated efforts of organizations and individuals in supporting them.
Fabian Lalfakawma, Assistant Secretary of the Central Young Mizo Association (CYMA), graced the occasion as the chief guest. The program witnessed participation from various NGOs and officials from the Mizoram State Child Protection Department, underscoring the collaborative effort in addressing the needs of AIDS-affected children.
Established in 2006 with a noble mission to care for children impacted by HIV/AIDS, Gan Sabra Home has remained steadfast in its commitment over the years. Presently, the home shelters 50 orphaned children who have lost their parents to the devastating disease.
Moreover, through its Community Support Programme, which includes sponsorship initiatives, Gan Sabra Home extends its reach beyond its walls. Over 300 children from 120 families across Aizawl, Lunglei, Champhai, Mamit, Kolasib, and Saitual districts receive vital support for education, food, and medication, ensuring their holistic well-being.
In addition to providing essential provisions, Gan Sabra Home plays a crucial role in healthcare by distributing Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) medication and formula milk for infants born to HIV/AIDS-positive mothers.
