Meghalaya MP James Sangma lauds Delhi Police action in racial slur case

Shillong: Rajya Sabha MP James Sangma has welcomed the swift action taken by Delhi Police in the case involving racial slurs against a boy from Tripura, saying timely action against such incidents can help raise awareness and discourage people from taking racism lightly.

Speaking to reporters, Sangma said racism was a deeply complex issue that could not be eliminated overnight and would require a long-term effort.

“Racism is a deeply complex issue, and it is not something that we can find a solution to immediately. It is a very long-drawn-out process,” he said.

However, he stressed that prompt action whenever such incidents come to light could send a strong message that racial slurs should not be treated casually.

Sangma said swift action could help people understand the seriousness of racial discrimination and the consequences of making such remarks.

He also commended Delhi Police for its quick response, describing it as a positive beginning in addressing the issue.

According to Sangma, greater public awareness and wider exposure of such incidents, along with knowledge of the consequences faced by those responsible, could help bring about a considerable reduction in racism over time.
