Shillong: The Meghalaya government has designated separate parking spaces for tourist vehicles registered in Assam to address complaints about haphazard parking across Shillong.
Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, who is in charge of the Transport Department, said on Wednesday that the decision was finalised at a meeting with stakeholders of the Shillong Recreation Ground Trust (SRGT).
Under the arrangement, smaller tourist vehicles registered in Assam will park at the MUDA parking lot on Keating Road, while larger buses will be accommodated at SRGT in Polo.
Dhar said the decision followed complaints over the random parking of Assam-registered tourist vehicles over the past few months. The government had also received a request from Assam Cabinet Minister Atul Bora and a representation from tourist vehicle operators in Assam.
He said the designated parking spaces were intended to streamline parking in Shillong, adding that the Keating Road facility would be reserved for Assam-registered vehicles, as Meghalaya-registered vehicles already have designated parking spaces.
Dhar clarified that Assam-registered tourist vehicles travelling to Sohra and other destinations would remain free to travel to their intended locations, and that the arrangement would not restrict their movement.
