Shillong: Amid the controversy surrounding the abrupt removal of officers from the Lokayukta, Dr Mukul Sangma, Former chief minister and a prominent leader of the Meghalaya Trinamool Congress (TMC), has raised questions about the intentions behind the move.
Dr Sangma has cast doubt on whether there was any malicious intent behind the decision, questioning the necessity for the government to replace individuals when the Lokayukta is effectively carrying out its duties.
“The Lokayukta has already addressed numerous cases of corruption, indicating the significant responsibilities it holds. The essence of the Lokayukta is crucial. The state expected at least an institution that would act as a deterrent, so it should be allowed to operate to its fullest potential,” stated the former Chief Minister.
He emphasised the importance of instilling a fear of the law, asserting that if the Lokayukta fails to perform its role, it undermines the fundamental purpose of legal institutions. According to Dr. Sangma, the fear of legal repercussions encourages individuals, including policymakers, to adhere to regulations and self-regulate their actions.
“The fundamental purpose of institutions like the Lokayukta and other enacted laws is to establish this fear of the law. When individuals fear legal consequences, they are more likely to regulate their behavior accordingly,” Sangma emphasised.

It’s worth noting that the state government’s dismissal of three officials from their positions was done abruptly, reportedly through a WhatsApp message. There were allegations that the officers were removed due to their involvement in uncovering a significant scam within the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC), implicating a member of the ruling National People’s Party (NPP).
The dismissed officials include former IPS officer and director of inquiry and prosecution, J. Rymmai, along with enquiry-cum-investigating officers R. Pde and Anil K. Sangma.
