Guwahati: The Supreme Court, on Wednesday, directed a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the death of a 25-year-old woman from Manipur that occurred 11 years ago in Delhi.
The unresolved case has remained a matter of concern, with the court emphasising the erosion of public trust in law enforcement institutions due to such unresolved crimes.
The victim, who was working at a call center in Delhi, was found dead in her rented house in south Delhi in 2013. Despite the passage of over a decade, Delhi Police failed to shed light on the circumstances surrounding her death. Allegations of police shielding the accused further fueled the family’s demand for a fair investigation.
A bench comprising Justices J K Maheshwari and Sudhanshu Dhulia responded to a plea filed by the family of the deceased, seeking CBI intervention after expressing dissatisfaction with the Delhi Police’s investigation.
The court stressed the importance of both fairness and effectiveness in criminal investigations, noting the family’s logistical challenges in pursuing justice from their distant home in Manipur.

The bench highlighted the gravity of the situation, asserting that the case warranted a thorough CBI investigation to dispel any doubts and ensure justice for the victim. Refuting the possibility of suicide, the court pointed out the presence of blood spatter at the crime scene, indicating a homicidal death.
Previously, the family had approached the Delhi High Court seeking a CBI inquiry, but their petition was dismissed on various grounds, including inconclusive DNA evidence and the inability to locate the victim’s boyfriend, who had not cooperated with the investigation.
