The girl has been identified as Biplabi Das of Nandanath Saikia College, Titabor.
Jagat Singh, a 63-year-old man from Titabor in Jorhat district, has been arrested for allegedly raping, impregnating, and later murdering a 19-year-old college student to conceal her pregnancy.
It is suspected that the girl was allegedly raped before being murdered.
According to reports, the girl has been missing since November 7 while returning from college.
Family members filed a missing-person complaint at Titabor police station.
“The accused has confessed to the crime during interrogation. We are collecting all scientific evidence to ensure a watertight case and deliver justice at the earliest,” a senior police officer said.
“We filed a missing-person complaint at Titabor police station, but the police have not taken the case seriously or done anything to search for her. Today, her body was recovered from the septic tank,” alleged a local resident.
Agitated residents of Titabor gheraoed Titabor police station seeking justice for the victim. They blamed police inaction for the murder of the innocent college-going girl.
“We demand capital punishment for Jagat Singh, or that he be killed by police in an encounter. We appeal to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to transfer the case to a fast-track court,” said an agitated resident.
Meanwhile, the girl’s body has been sent for postmortem, and police have launched an investigation.
