We’ve always believed that journalism begins with trust. At EastMojo, that trust was never in short supply. For years, readers from across the Northeast and beyond have supported our reporting, shared our stories, and stood by our mission to give voice to a region often overlooked in national coverage.

But trust, we learned, doesn’t always translate into support.

Our readers were loyal; they visited regularly, engaged deeply, and valued our independence; yet, very few had taken the step to subscribe. We began to wonder if people simply didn’t want to pay for news. But when we looked closer, the truth was different. The problem wasn’t interest. It was intention.

We hadn’t built the right bridges between the two.

When we joined the GNI Digital Native Catalyst Program, it gave us the space to pause and examine our reader revenue strategy more closely. Through the Digital Maturity Assessment and 1:1 consultations with the team, we started to see our subscription journey from a reader’s perspective.

We realised that while our journalism was strong, our subscription story wasn’t being told clearly enough. The prompts to subscribe were scattered and inconsistent – sometimes visible, sometimes not. The message about why to subscribe varied across pages.

So, we began to rebuild; gently, thoughtfully, and with empathy for our readers.

At the same time, we created a dedicated subscription page that told our story the way we tell others – with heart. It explained why supporting EastMojo mattered, what readers gained in return, and how their contribution helped sustain independent journalism from the Northeast.

Behind all this, Mediology helped us build a data layer that tracked how readers interacted with each part of the journey. For the first time, we could see what worked and what didn’t, and improve based on real behaviour rather than assumptions.

What followed was both humbling and energising. Within a month, our subscription revenue started to grow. But more importantly, we began to feel a deeper connection between our newsroom and our readers; not just as consumers of news, but as partners in sustaining it.

The experience taught us that reader revenue is not about pushing harder; it’s about listening better. It’s about knowing when to ask, how to ask, and why the story behind that ask matters.

Our journey through the GNI Digital Native Catalyst Program reminded us that growth doesn’t always come from grand overhauls; sometimes, it’s about getting the small things right. The right message, at the right moment, delivered with sincerity.

That’s how we turned loyalty into lasting support; one thoughtful nudge at a time.
