Aizawl: Ladakh-based activist, engineer and educator Sonam Wangchuk met Mizo National Front (MNF) president Zoramthanga at Mizoram House in New Delhi on September 28 to discuss Mizoram’s peace process and the Memorandum of Settlement that led to the Mizo Peace Accord.
Wangchuk sought the meeting to better understand the experience behind the accord and the reconciliation process between the Mizo National Front and the Government of India.
“I want to study a successful Memorandum of Settlement like the one in Mizoram. I also want to better understand the experiences of Zoramthanga, who played a role in the process of achieving the Mizo Peace Accord,” Wangchuk said.
The meeting lasted for more than an hour, with the two discussing the peace accord as well as political and social issues.
Zoramthanga shared details of the peace process and the circumstances surrounding the agreement. He described the Mizo Peace Accord as a durable and comprehensive settlement that has drawn interest from those studying successful peace processes.
Wangchuk said he wanted to continue studying the accord and expressed his interest in visiting Mizoram with colleagues from Ladakh to learn more about the state’s experience and the implementation of the settlement.
