Assam: Internet shutdown imposed in Baksa following law & order situation

The Assam government has suspended mobile internet services across Baksa district following a law and order situation that arose on Wednesday during the transfer of undertrial prisoners from police custody to the district jail.

According to an official notification issued by the Home and Political Department, the decision was taken after authorities reported public unrest near the Baksa District Jail. The government said it feared that social media and messaging platforms could be used to spread rumours or inflammatory content, potentially worsening the situation.

The order, issued by Additional Chief Secretary Ajay Tewari under Section 5(2) of the Indian Telegraph Act, 1885 and the Temporary Suspension of Telecom Services (Public Emergency or Public Safety) Rules, 2017, prohibits all mobile internet and data services in the district with immediate effect and until further notice.
