Guwahati: Representatives of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) pledged their commitment to revitalizing progressive regionalism in Assam during the party’s central executive meeting on Tuesday.
Held at the AGP headquarters in Ambari, the meeting focused on preparations for the upcoming panchayat and autonomous council elections, with discussions emphasizing the formation of election management committees to strategize for the polls.
The long-awaited panchayat elections, rescheduled for February 2025, are set to be conducted in two phases. The revised voters’ list will be published by December 30, 2024, with the election schedule expected in the first week of January.
The AGP, a key ally in the Assam government, resolved to strengthen its digital membership drive while also planning to commemorate Swahid Divas on December 10. The event will be centrally held at Bhawanipur in Barpeta district, the birthplace of Khargeswar Talukdar, the first martyr of the Assam Movement.
AGP president and state minister Atul Bora, along with working president Keshab Mahanta, presided over the central executive meeting. Diptimoyee Choudhury, the AGP-supported candidate backed by the NDA, was felicitated for her emphatic victory in the Assam Legislative Assembly bye-election from the Bongaigaon constituency.
Choudhury, the wife of former minister and AGP leader Phani Bhushan Choudhury, defeated Congress candidate Brajenjit Singha by a significant margin of over 30,000 votes.
“Key discussions during the meeting focused on the party’s digital membership drive. I urged all colleagues to wholeheartedly commit to organizational responsibilities, amplify the membership campaign, and strengthen grassroots-level public engagement as we prepare for the forthcoming panchayat and autonomous council elections,” Bora said.
Senior party leaders, including MPs Phani Bhushan Choudhury and Birendra Prasad Baishya, as well as vice presidents, general secretaries, district committee presidents, and representatives from allied organizations, were present at the meeting.
The AGP also reflected on its 40th foundation day celebration held in October this year. Leaders, members, and supporters of the party gathered for a central programme at Jeraigaon under Chabua subdivision in Dibrugarh district. The event featured the hoisting of the party flag, tributes to 855 martyrs of the Assam Agitation, and a cultural programme showcasing the party’s legacy.
With the party ramping up efforts for the panchayat and autonomous council elections, AGP leaders remain focused on reinforcing grassroots engagement and expanding its digital outreach to maintain its regional significance.
