Guwahati: Indradhanush Gas Grid Limited (IGGL) on Friday brought together policymakers, regulators and energy industry representatives at the Northeast Region Gas Conclave 2026 in Guwahati to discuss expanding natural gas infrastructure, improving affordability and increasing its adoption across the region.
The conclave, organised in association with Resonance Energy at Vivanta, Guwahati, focused on the four pillars of natural gas — availability, accessibility, affordability and acceptability.
Delivering the welcome address, IGGL CEO Subrata Das said the Northeast Gas Grid was expected to be completed soon. He stressed that close coordination among stakeholders would be essential to translate the infrastructure investment into a gas-based economy for the region.
The discussions covered domestic gas production, liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports, pipeline connectivity, distribution networks, safety standards and the expansion of natural gas markets.
Participants highlighted the need to connect gas-producing areas with consumption centres, improve infrastructure utilisation and make natural gas more accessible to industries and other consumers.
The technical sessions brought together representatives from City Gas Distribution (CGD) companies, including Assam Gas Company Limited, GAIL Gas, Arunachal Gas, Indraprastha Gas Limited, Bengal Gas and HPOIL Gas Private Limited.
The discussions examined the role of transmission and distribution networks in extending gas access, alongside the importance of reliable infrastructure and safety standards in supporting industrial growth.
An exhibitors’ forum showcased technologies, equipment and services for the natural gas industry, while a technical poster session featuring Oil India Limited (OIL), Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), Brahmaputra Cracker and Polymer Limited (BCPL) and PBGPL highlighted technical innovations related to the sector.
The conclave also featured discussions on gas availability and sourcing, with participation from representatives of GAIL, ONGC and Hindustan Oil Exploration Company, among others.
IGGL’s Northeast Gas Grid is designed to connect all eight northeastern states to the National Gas Grid. The company is implementing a pipeline network of approximately 1,670 km covering Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura and Sikkim.
A major milestone was achieved on March 13, 2026, when Phase I of the project, covering approximately 553 km across Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Another key component is the Duliajan Feeder Line, designed to transport indigenous natural gas from Oil India Limited’s sources into the National Gas Grid through IGGL’s pipeline network. The feeder line has a capacity of 3.5 million metric standard cubic metres per day (MMSCMD).
Established in 2018, IGGL is a joint venture of Indian Oil Corporation Limited, ONGC, GAIL (India) Limited, Oil India Limited and Numaligarh Refinery Limited.
The conclave concluded with calls for greater coordination among government agencies, energy companies, regulators and industry participants to strengthen natural gas connectivity and support the development of a gas-based economy in the Northeast.
